I just received my new rosewood Patricola C clarinet in July and have been
playing it quite a lot with the orchestra, as much of the music we have in
the folders right now is for clarinet in C. It is very free-blowing and
projects well through the orchestra. My music director didn't know that I
was playing on a C instrument and during the Zampa Overture solo and was
quite surprised that the solo came off without a hitch on the first reading.
He was under the impression that my transposing skills were golden. I have
been asked to play in a lot of unusual situations as of late on this fun new
instrument. If it makes any difference, I am using my Greg Smith cocobolo Bb
mouthpiece with a new Rovner ligature. This clarinet takes some getting
used to because of the different pitch (at least for me it did), but if you
are used to playing an E-fer the size difference is negligible. Again, the
clarinet feels good in the hands and is beautiful to look at. At the last
few concerts where I have used my Patricolas, people in the audience will
come up and ask about the instuments because they are so striking.
