The object of uniforms is, of course UNIFORMITY. Concert dress does not
necessarily have to be uniform. In the jazz band case we were discussing,
the object is surely to present a unified appearance, whether in tuxes or
not. The expense of having to maintain a separate group of
alternately-tailored uniforms drives the decision. And since more women
can wear men's clothes than men can (or will) wear women's clothes, the nod
goes to men's outfits. Fiscal reality trumps biology every time! :-)
