Here in San Francisco, a male clarinetist in a band recently wore a royal
blue satin evening gown at a cafe gig. This particular cafe is a very
hard gig because the audience tends to treat any music as background
noise.

The reaction of the crowd was amusing. The audience felt they had to act
as if nothing was out of the ordinary because his devotees were all
listening to his exquisite playing. Lots of people looked around for
reactions of others, and when they didn't really find any, they just
watched and listened.

Because of this, I feel they listened with *much* more attention than they
otherwise would have done. It took a kick to remind them that nobody's
playing CDs; instead, 5 hardworking people are playing real music for
the audience's enjoyment.

I think I'd draw the line at fishnet stockings, however.
