Subj: [kl] Plating wear answer
Date: Mon, 6 Sep 1999 21:13:15 -0400

This is the answer to plating problems. No
manufacturer is at fault for premature nickel plating
wear for one reason. Nickel is affected by body acids
and will always wear off, no matter what preventative
measures are taken - short of not playing the horn!
This is why nickel should not be used for key plating.
Period. Silver plate is far superior to nickel and
does not seem to react to body acid/chemicals. Chrome
plated keys would be better than nickel, but I find
the material too slippery for instrument keys. Chrome
is ultra-hard, durable and always shiny, but can flake
when bending keys for adjustment. Manufacturers should
be held responsible for using an inferior plating
material, i.e. nickel. Other than that, the only blame
or gripe should be directed at mother nature and damn
nickel plate!
