Having flopped my fingers on silver, nickel, pot metal, brass, mother of
pearl, and the chrome-like rhodium plating Leblanc used to cover their keys
with, I would expect chrome to be somewhat slippery. Chrome would also
have a tendency to flake if not well bonded to copper. I have two Leblancs
with rhodium plated keys; one -- got second-hand -- was so pitted (yes,
even rhodium will pit! - and if rhodium will do it, so will chrome?) that I
finally gave up and took it down to the base metal which is good old
nickel. The nickel takes such a beautiful polish and feels so good on the
fingers that I wonder why we would want plating to begin with -- other than
aesthetics. The other rhodium Leblanc is plateau-keyed and really quite
nice to handle although it feels "fat" and is very heavy.
I suppose it will boil down to the warm-tone nickel luster or silver camp
and the chrome rhodium camp.
