a community orchestra conductor used to comment, "this isn't a marching
band, " when players were inattentive. we didn't like the band slam, so
everytime the strings were out of rhythm wind players took turns saying,
'they didn't have marching band'.

An expert on instrument preservation at Oberlin College told me that, in
addition to temperature, instruments do best at about 55% humidity. Recently
a violin repair person (a very good violin repair person) told me that
humidity up to 75% for short periods isn't too bad.

I'd be interested in other opinions/facts.
