Ben--
I have been playing my Clarinet for about five years. When I first started I
had the world's best teacher. His name was Mr. Witton. He was a tall man that
rode a motorcycle to my elementary school--a maroon motorcycle. He used to snap
his fingers to help us keep the beats with simple songs but I never could catch
on. So, he had me stay after one day. He asked about the kinds of music I
listened to--at the time it was probably something I find terribly lame now
(i.e. Ace of Base). He played some of that sort of music and asked me to clap
to the beat. Then after about a half hour of new beats and endless tunes stuck
in my head I went home. We repeated this everyday until I could play simple
things without him counting with me. It was simple and fun...and probably just
as useful.
