Rachael, given that she recently dropped the instrument, I'd make sure that
it is in fact in good adjustment. Sometimes, if the horn is only a little
out, an experienced player can play it okay but a student can't, especially a
beginner. The keys have been bent back into position, but are there any
leaks anywhere? I just ask because you indicate she could cross the break
well before, and "suddenly" is having trouble with it. As far as the
practicing challenge goes, I agree with you that a little bit every day is a
lot better than nothing! I equate it to training for sports, and remind the
kids that they have to keep the muscles used in playing in condition, the
same way an athlete does. They can usually relate to that. Good luck!
