Subj: [kl] turk's head as a ligature
Date: Mon, 30 Aug 1999 08:50:22 -0400

Hi,

no, I don't want to start another thread on the best ligature (and
I searched the archives) ;-)

Just for your information: I lately saw someone using a woven string
as ligature. I don't know if you can buy this and how it was made
exactly, but it inspired me to take out my Ashley's book of knots and
tie a turk's head. It work's! It holds the reed like a string ligature
but you only have to pull it over the mouthpiece. As a side-effect it
looks really pretty, too.

For those, who don't know what I am talking about: A turk's head is
often used by scouts and you can see some really nice pictures at
http://www.golden-knots.com/

For the initiated: I used a '4 leads 3 bights' and enlarged this to
'12 leads 11 bights', using string with approx. 2mm diameter. You have
to carefully adjust the size of the knot to your mouthpiece.

Christian
