Every nickel-plated clarinet I've owned has had it's
plating wear off (in highly used areas) within a year.
By the third year of use, most of the plating on
pinkey keys, trill keys, rings, etc. has completely
worn through to the bare metal. I believe this is due
to body acids chemically reacting to the nickel. My
silver plated instruments are still in excellent
shape, even after years of use. Buffet/Leblanc should
only offer silver plate, IMHO. I love the excuse of
"most players prefer nickel plated keys"! Absolute
hogwash. Naturally, you'll sell more nickel plated
instruments if they are $250 cheaper! How many makers
other than the two mentioned above use nickel on their
top of the line instruments? Exactly.
