I'm sure Mark can add much more to this, but Safe Mode is Windows booting up
with a minimal set of drivers. This usually occurs because you did not shut the
machine down "gracefully" (i.e. did not "Shut Down" from the Starm Menu") or
that you had to reset it with the reset button either while running or while it
was booting up (because it "hung" on the boot-up). It is sort of a "fail-safe"
mode that allows you to fix things that may have gone wrong when the machine
decided it needed to boot in Safe Mode. That part is for the more computer
savy.

All I do when that happens is do the gracefull "Shut Down" and then re-start the
computer when it tells me it is safe to do so. It should come back up in
"normal" mode.

What quite possibly happend to you is you had a power interruption/spike (hence
the machine shut down "un-gracefully") and when the power returned to normal,
the machine turned back on and started up in Safe Mode, which is it's default
when this sort of thing happens.
Whew...I hope that helps!
