Craig,
Technically, it is NOT a cadenza but an "Eingang" (see Dan
Leeson's masterful posting about the Mozart Concerto from last year).
Therefore, it is not a LONG thing but a quite short (no more than, let's
say 30-45 seconds) flight of fancy. No restatement and embellishment upon,
the theme, etc. However, it is very stylistically correct to do something
showy there. To NOT do so would have been considered the mark of an
extremely unimaginative player in Weber's day. Ornaments include all sorts
of trills and turns (grupetti, for the cognicenti) and changing 1/8-note
passages t0 16th- or 32nd-note passages by adding all sorts of passing
notes.
