Yes lets get specific!
Wasn't the beginning of this a comment about differing color keys? I think it is possible for different batches to have pretty differing chemical composition. In my AFS Metalcaster's Reference and guide German Silver is listed as an "often-referred-to Trade Name Alloy" with a nominal composition of 46-50% Copper, 29-34% Zinc and 20-31% Nickel. In the same book 5 grades/types of German Silver are given with narrower specifications but they range from 46-55.2% Copper, 22.6-34%Zinc and 20-25.8%Nickel. The "best" grade has the highest Zinc and the lowest Copper which would be pretty white-silver looking. Nickel Silver is listed as 50-62%Copper, 20-36%Zinc and 7-30%Nickel. As with everything there are trade-offs. The greater copper the more ductile but also more yellow, the more zinc the whiter but also more brittle.
I just found another interesting note- there is always some degree of impurity. Nickel silver in another table is divided into Nickel silver and leaded nickel- _both_ of which are referred to commonly as German Silver.
I don't have an ASTM specifications book handy but I know there are a number of different specifications for Nickel silver.
All this foundry talk is taking me back a few years!
Anne
