I've tried leather pads on my R-13 recently and did
not like the result. With correct pad heights, the
sound tended to be a bit duller and less flexible than
with skin pads. Seating the leather pads was easy. The
pads were also mushy feeling and didn't give a crisp
key closing. Leather is also too porous to give an
air tight seal (even after treatment with wax,
silicon, etc).
