It is not likely that your German silver has gold in it - but possible, I
suppose. German silver is essentially a brass (zinc - copper alloy)
with a
high proportion of zinc. Despite what some contributors to the list
(including materials scientists) have said in the past, it is *not* the
same as "nickel silver" - it's a much older idea, and was around before
nickel was used commercially. Modern versions of German silver do contain
nickel, however.
"Nickel silver" used as a base for silver-plated cutlery is much yellower
in hue than the "German silver" which used to be used generally for
instrument keys. It
could be that your keys are made of this sort of alloy.
