At the DePaul Clarinet Wiorkshop in a Master Class led by John Bruce Yeh we
heard from a very talented young clarinetist who played a Etude from Rose
or Cavallini --- can't recall which it was. The young artist had a little
"hiss" escaping. Mr. Yeh complimented him on his piece, but told him that
"heating the room" was unnecessary, or something along those lines ---
sallowing that if air wasn't used to produce a tone, it was wasted. The
latter was instructional; the former brought a laugh from those observing
and a sad look from the young performer. I wonder if such air escaping may
relate to nervousness; such state contributing to not getting setup
properly.

"Here's another one... Does anyone else out there in clarinetland get
nnoyed by loose embouchures, allowing a loud PFSSS!!! at every forte or
accented note? Orchestral wind players can, for the most part, get away
with it, but reducing forces to chamber orchestra or smaller
brings all those noises irritatingly to the fore.

I don't like to hear that. Some young players have heard so many
clarinetists let air escape that they begin to think it is the way you are
supposed to play. My theory has always been that any air which is just
escaping into the atmosphere isn't helping you to produce a tone."
