A cure for audience noise:

I don't know if Stern was justified in stopping the performance or not,
but clearly he was annoyed by the distractions. I don't blame him. I
love opera, and of particular annoyance to me is talking - rather loudly
- during the overture. A couple of years ago, my friend Judi, my mother,
and I were attending an opera. There was a man sitting two seats away
from Judi. He insisted on carrying on his conversation through the
overture and into the first aria, despite numerous "SSSHhhh"s from Judi
and others. Finally, Judi reached the point of no return. She rolled up
her program, reached over, and soundly smacked the offender on the arm!
It worked, and we enjoyed the rest of the opera with the smackee sitting
in stunned silence. Ah, opera. Blood, sex, sword fights, murder, lust -
and now, audience participation! Hey, I might have missed a great
clarinet moment. I'm glad Judi was there!
