Subj: [kl] Advice on student.............

Dear collective wisdom:

I recently have just acquired a clarinet student who has been playing the
instrument for 2 school years in the band program there.

She has so many problems! She has never tongued, never listened to the sound
of her instrument, leans the clarinet on an angle and plays on her left knee,
puts the mouthpiece in her mouth and plays from the roof of her mouth, and
has bad fingering position.

She is an ambitious student though, bright and cute as a pin. She will be in
the 6th grade.

I don't want to discourage her because all along she believed she has done
great in band.

Her basic theory skills; key signatures, rhythm, note names, etc., are all
pretty good.

Has someone ever had a student come to them in this bad of shape, what
happened and what did you do?

Thanks in advance,
Georgette Calzati
