Chuck,
In South America, it is common for players to have a full-boehm
clarient. Therefore, the low e-flat presents no problem. While Villa Lobos
SHOULD have known better, he obviously didn't (at least at the time he
wrote this peice). As for why the publisher never bothered changing it,
you'll find that publishers usually don't really care what crap they are
printing up and will not change unless the composer has enough
interest and/or clout to make them re-print things. For example,
Stravinsky must have known about all the egregious misprints in all his
orchestral music. But did he care? NO!! Did Boosey ever change anything?
NO!! Not until the copyrights started expiring did they get around to
fixing all those mistakes (since now ANYONE could publish the **correct**
parts). Certainly not while Stravinsky was alive.
