Dear Chuck, I have played that several times.
The problem is that when Villa-Lobos was alived all the clarinet players in
Brazil just own full boehm clarinets. No A clarinets could be found. Even
the clarinet players in France(Villa-Lobos lived there for several years)
had used full Boehm A clarinets. For that reason you can find, in
Villa-Lobos trio for clarinet, oboe and basson, low Eb even for A clarinets.
About the edition you have in hands, probably it is a french edition and the
french people do not change the Villa-Lobos manuscript. And, you know,
transpose that for A clarinet would became that part more dificult.
