Nope, that wasn't the reason. Don't know _what_ your problem actually was.

The rules are built into the server or pages on what gets picked up after
a connection, but all that's required to initiate the connection is the machine
name (and possibly port number).

Another confusing thing for people:
The first part of a URL is not case sensitive (WWW.LeGeRe.com works fine)
but anything after that _is_ case sensitive. Some servers may correct your
misspellings, but if the site ever moves to a different server then you're
SOL in trying to get to the page.
