Fourth graders are about nine years old. Sometimes it depends on when
your school district will accept first graders. In some districts, you
must be six to start first grade (approx Aug 31). In others, you must be
six by Dec 31 of the school year or various other dates. Generally, in
Pennsylvania, instrumental music starts in October of fourth grade.
Those children would be nine or turn nine soon. Some will turn 10 during
4th grade. Some programs start with Tonettes/Flutophones (recorders) in
third grade, Orff instruments at various times etc. Each school is a
little bit different.
FYI - each year is a different grade - First through Twelfth ( with the
upper grades (High School) being Freshman (9th), Sophomore (10th), Junior
(11th) and Senior (12th). In addition, many districts have Kindergarten
available for five year olds from which they move to first grade etc.

Hope this helps.
