When I do live sound gigs, I put all the woodwind microphones between or
just over music stands. No instrument radiates sound in one direction, so
you get a little bit of space and you end up with a far superior sound.
Many sound "grunts" that mix these shows know very little about acoustic
music and how to make instruments sound good. All they care about is gain
before feedback. There are ways of getting relatively close to get good
gain, but still have it sound good.
