I don't think your experience is typical. I think Mitchel Lurie's are
good for kids since they are reasonably consistent and there a lot of good
reeds in a box.

Personally I use V-12s (#3) which work for me but take a certain amount of
fussing with to get a decent number from the box. I don't find them too
hard. In fact, the Vandoren literature indicates that a V-12 is softer
than the same number in a standard Vandoren and that is my experience as
well.

This was sort of my point. I have tried Mitchel Lurie, regular Vandoren,
V12's, Rico, Rico Royal and La Voz and maybe some others. I keep going
back
to the Rico Royals. Vandoren's are too soft/mellow sounding and the V12's

are like playing on a 2x4 no matter what number I tried. Rico Royals are
in
between.
