interesting question...

two reactions:
my main experience with one younger than traditional 5/6th grade
beginners was a 4th grader who had several years piano lesson experience.

size and motor skills were not a problem. she was not real consistent
about practicing. there was one drawback, that when she got to the
school band program she was impatient with the 'review' time--schedule
did not allow having her go direct to 2nd year class. and the band
director (a fine clarinetist and teacher) put her knowledge to work
coaching the folks she had a head start on.
she dropped band the next year to focus on dance--i am not sure whether
impatience with class situation had much to do with the change or not.

ironically, her piano time seemed to have done NOTHING to develop her
own sense of rhythm. how many dancers don't have rhythm(g)

i have been very impressed with the reading and musical skills elementary
students have who have been thru that experience with an elementary music
teacher. the one hungarian musician i know says that anyone who wanted
to play and instrument while she was growing up had at least a year of
kodaly before allowed to hold an instrument. and that made her survival
as a violinist much easier when she went to conservatory at age 10...
