I am a light asthmatic. I get it only in cold weather, when exercising.
Marching band, therefore was a culprit. I kept my inhaler in my uniform,
and a spare with one of the band parents. I was the lone tubist for a
while, and even in the year when I had an assistant, he didn't play out
much. The trombones and trumpets really gave it the ol' volume, so I had to
keep up. As long as I could breathe well, I could. My inhaler was ventolin
(Albuterol). If I had any inkling of trouble, I took two deep, long puffs
before the hard work started. I do remember my freshman year (clarinet),
and my sophomore year (sax/trombone/baritone), and the asthma was just as
detrimental to my playing then.
