Subj: Re: [kl] Earliest Age to Start Playing Clarinet?

I started playing just after I turned 8. I've never had any problems of any
sort, physically, nor while playing. I was fairly accomplished (the school
pushed us hard), by nine.

I bought a Legere reed in February, and use it a lot. It is possible that
the reed does not have the potential "range" of expressiveness of a good
cane reed, but is a lot better than a bad cane reed. It's been worth the
money for me - I've used one reed for band rehearsals and concerts since I
got it. I still use cane reeds for practise and lessons.

The biggest advantage is that you can pick it up cold, and it plays -
shortly after I bought it I was asked to play some descant lines for a hymn
festival - play two pieces, wait 20 minutes, play again - over an evening.
And the reed played exactly the same every time I picked up the clarinet.
