Oh, Man!!! Have you opened up a can of worms here... Asking engineers about
preamps is like asking clarinetists about mouthpieces. Everybody has their
favorite and nobody else's is good.

I'd be happy to offer my $0.02, but I need to know a couple of things first.
1. What kind of microphones are you using,
2. What instruments are you recording
3. What is your recording medium (and the rest of your recording chain).
4. What is your price range (most important) and how many channels do you
expect to get for that money?

There are a lot of pres out there and it is important to have a good set.
If you have bad microphones, however, good pre's won't help your sound.
Good mics and good positioning will do a lot more than a good set of pre's.
I've gotten great sounding recordings using Yamaha or Mackie pre's built
into a console, but I have good microphones and I know where to put them.
