The long life and consistency of the synthetic reed can outweigh some loss
of tonal quality for a beginner, in my opinion. They are also excellent
for doubling and for use in the dreaded (dare I say it?) MARCHING BAND. A
good, consistent reed during the early going of a clarinetist's development
can be just what is needed to prevent discouragement. I'm not certain,
with my very late start, that I would have stick with it through reed
frustrations. Instead, I was extremely fortunate to find a good,
responsive, and long-lived reed early in MY training which allowed me to
concentrate on other things. Reed adjustment, etc., can wait until a
little later.

As far as care is concerned, just keep it clean and protect the tip from
damage. Soaking it is useless, since it does not absorb water. The case
Fibracells come in is very protective, but any standard reed holder will do
fine as well.

If you have to mic a saxophone, the rest of the band is too loud.
