First, congratulations on getting the principal chair! As regards the A
clarinet, it may be worth checking out whether the orchestra owns one. My
youth orchestra has two. Also, if you can (and haven't already), check the
music being played just to make sure you DO need one. Mine has been sadly
under-used this year - so far I've used it in one movement of the Berlioz
Symphonie Fantastique, and that's it! It could be worth checking out music
stores to see if they have any reasonable second-hand ones. Do get your
teacher to check out any which you look at buying, though. Don't
automatically think you must have an R-13 or equivalent, either,
particularly if you're not going to use it an awful lot. I play an R-13 Bb,
but didn't see the need to have an R-13 A, so I bought a second-hand E-11
and it's all I need. It may also be worth asking teachers/professionals in
your area if they have one they could loan you - I know my teacher had two A
clarinets for quite a while. Good luck!
