(Better to ask than remain stupid. <g>)

I've seen various references to Klezmer music on the list, but wasn't
familiar with the term. I've read some information on the history and
music theory related to it. It wasn't a part of music theory when I went
through it (late sixties.) I understand, now, what it basically is and
(rather thickly, I admit) the harmony involved. However, ...

What is a Klezmer clarinet?

What is the relationship of Klezmer music to the clarinet in general?

TIA for the instruction.

Jim Hobby

I'M NO EXPERT- BUT IT IS JEWISH IN TRADITION. IT DOES FOLLOW BASIC SCALE
PATTERNS- SOUNDS MEDITERRANEAN AND ALL- IT'S PLAYED AT A LOT OF JEWISH
FUNCTIONS, WEDDINGS, BAR MITSVA'S (SORRY IF I MISSPELLED!) THE CLARINET IS
A VERY IMORTANT PART OF THE KLEZMER BAND. THE MAIN INSTRUMENT, OR ONE OF
THEM. SOMETIMES VOICE, GUITAR, ETC. CAN ANYONE HELP HERE??? ANYWAY,
IT'S SIMILAR TO JAZZ IN THAT YOU IMPROV SOME, AND ADD ORNAMENTS. I GUESS
YOU BASICALLY LEARN THE TUNES THEN DO YOUR OWN THING. YOU SHOULD CHECK OUT
THIS SITE FOR MICHELE GINGRAS, SHE'S A GREAT KLEZMER PLAYER!
