This is at least tangentially related to the list, or at least to the
Sneezy site: when I download MIDI accompaniments onto my computer, is
there some way to use them without practicing right next to the computer
(which is not in a place where I practice)? Like taping from the
computer to a cassette? If so, how do I record from my computer
(PowerMac) to a cassette recorder? Do I need software? Hardware?
Having accompaniments to Brahms and Mozart and Debussy, etc., would
really enhance my enjoyment, if only by partly covering up my own
playing.

---------------------------------

Bill, lots of the midis on the net are hardly worth taping (wrong notes,
and lack of expression). Even my own Debussy Rhapsody on my free midi page
is just fair ( I greatly improved it for the "My Tempo" Recording series,
with about 3 hours more work into it). To tape, you must have an output of
your soundcard, and plug the output into your cassette input (or microphone
jack). Radio Shack has the plugs.
Speaking of "plugs" ;) I have a service that creates Accompaniments on
Audio CD. If you have a CD player available where you practice, these are
top quality - ("recital" quality) recordings, and the tempos recorded are
custom made (even with the cadenza pauses to your specs) - No Computer
needed. The Natl. Flute Assc. magazine just did an article on them in their
Summer Issue reviewing them as one of the "big 3" (Vivace, Music Minus One,
and My Tempo) Accompaniment products. There are samples on the web page,
but the real CD's sound a lot better.
On the other hand, if you're playing lots of wrong notes on your own, maybe
it doesn't matter ;)
