Actually, Win95/98's method of multitasking (cooperative multitasking in
Win9X vs. Unix & NT's preemptive multitasking) is in most cases _better_ at
this sort of thing; an application can refuse to relinquish control during
processing. It's irritating when a program is written badly and doesn't hand
another process control, but absolutely necessary when recording at high
data rates.
In Unix a special real-time kernel is normally used for these cases; in NT's
case there's nothing you can do - your task will be switched (and context
switches are _always_ expensive) whether you like it or not.
