Having just gone through this process - using Sound Forge 4.5 to edit the
CD that will be released this year - I can assure you that you will need a
much better sound card than a sound blaster that is provided with the
computer. For instance, you need digital outs and ins - preferrably
Coaxial/Optical choices (both) as well as analog outs and ins. I purchased
a Prodif 24 - and it still had pops and sputters (see earlier question to
the list in the archives - answered very completely by Ben Maas and M.
Charlette) - which we have determined to be the way in which the Prodif 24
uses memory - not just the amount of memory. Solution? We have ordered a
Prodif Plus which has an option during installation that designates
specific memory that cannot be used by anything else - I think that is the
way it was described to me - and the tech at SEK'D America (who
manufactures the card) assures me the problem will go away. This is just
one example of any number of problems that can occur with sound cards and
drivers.
