In 1956 it was Prof. Francois Etienne, described in his ''Methode complete de
clarinette'' as ''1-ere clarinette solo de l'opera de Paris et de la societe
des concerts du conservatoire''.
The introduction of this 177 page Klose Method beginners' book says he
succeeded PARADIS.
In June 1956 I heard him at the Paris Opera in the pit. He played so
beautifully that I ran down 4 flights at intermission to meet him. I explained
that I was a humble alto sax player
from Canada and asked if he could recommend where I might buy an inexpensive
clarinet. He TOOK me the next day to the Maison Couesnon factory and selected
a $75
one for me (which I still play) . Couesnon has been closed now for several
years.
Then when I explained I need a couple of ab initio lessons before I left Paris
to do more touring, he took me to his studio, sold me a copy of his Klose
method for $2, and gave me my first lessons for about $3 each.
Now when people ask me where I studied clarinette I nonchalantly say ''Why in
Paris with Prof Etienne, principal of theParis Opera''!
