I couldn't agree more. We're lucky here in Christchurch to have an ex-Radio
New Zealand recording engineer who is also a cellist and does excellent
recordings.
It also applies to sound technicians in live music and theatre - they'll be
much better at their job if they're musicians. I've had bad experiences
playing in a jazz band with a complete imbecile behind the sound desk. I
know it's not easy to balance a band properly (I had some fun doing sound
for a five-piece jazz band a few weeks ago - the trumpet was my biggest
problem, because when he was open he was overloading, but with a Harmon mute
in, I had to reset everything!) but if you're a musician, it immediately
gives you a head start. I think it's due to the fact that a) you know how
to use your ears and b) you have a fair idea of how things SHOULD sound.
