Roger,

A lot has happened since 2-3 years ago. Here sia current EBAY auction where
the bid is at $10.00 with UNknown reserve:

"This is a high end portable stereo recorder and player....comes with
headphones, stereo microphone, carry case and i will throw in the optional
ac adaptor. Unit retails for $270...it is reconditioned(by Sony) and carries
the full 1 year warranty. can be seen at
http://www.sel.sony.com/SEL/consumer/ss5/portable/walkmanrtmstereos/walkmanr
tmrecordingstereos/wm-d3.shtml "

Also, there are plenty of DAT recorders for sale, some sound quite nice.
Prices are $300 + (to well over) $600 range. Some are new, some are used
with remainder of warranty.

I think a University-sponsored studio is a GREAT idea. Don't know how
accessible it would/could/should be for the Un-affiliated musician or
student. For a very important audition tape its obviously EXTREMELY
important. However, for that "lets do it right now" tape or public recital
that we wanted to capture it is NOT PORTABLE. <grin> Or is it ? <brow
furrowed>

I wonder how many recordings are received and played back on sub-standard
equipment, a car cd//cassette player (in rush hour traffic to boot) or
other circumstances where the standard of the recording is way better than
the playback equipment, introducing lots of distortion from such equipment
unrelated to the recording itself ?

BTW: At Depaul Clarinet Workshop they offered the Audition tapes back ---
had not seen this before. Is this "normal" or a special Depaul recycling
effort ? <grin> So many of the requests I see for auditions say that the
recording will NOT be returned.
