I know the Eastman School of Music offers such a service. There is a
recording department that records all degree recitals, and major concerts.
They can be hired by students to do other recordings as well. They are well
outfitted with gear and give a great product for a minimal price
($25/hr--$60/hr for commercial cds). The service is open for any present or
former student or faculty.

Because they are so busy, I also did very well recording recitals and
audition tapes for people. At the University of Southern Calif. (USC),
where I just graduated, there is a recording school, but not school
sponsored recordings. There are lots of people that can be hired privately
for such a purpose (myself included). I know many other local schools have
resident tech people. UCLA, CSULB, CSUN (I think), CSUF, out here all offer
recordings for students...

To get good recordings of your woodwinds and piano, you need to go to an
engineer that knows acoustic music. There are a bunch out here in LA, and
most work as freelance engineers. The people who make it big were all
musicians at one point. My team here includes a former singer, myself (a
clarinetist), a former guitar student of the Romero family, a trombonist,
and a former trumpet player. Shawn Murphy, one of the biggest filmscore
mixers in town (done a few like Star Wars, Saving Private Ryan, etc....) I
believe was a tuba player. Armand Steiner, another film mixer was a
fantastic violinist.

To be good at recording acoustic music, you HAVE to be a musician.

Enough for now....
