Seems from my limited experience with this that the guys who do sound and
onsite recordings for the local school and amateur theater productions often
have studio space set up somewhere either in a store front or in their
basements. They already own most of the sound equipment they need, so it's
only a matter of organizing space. They're not specialized to "electric
bands" or anything else. My single direct experience with one of these guys
(my son needed to record a trumpet audition for a jazz workshop he took this
summer at Philadelphia's University of the Arts) was that the recording (he
gave us both a CD and a tape cassette) was a lot better than I could have
made with any home equipment I could afford, and the cost was very
reasonable ($100 for the session, which we split with another boy who was
also auditioning for UA). By night this guy does the sound and recording for
most of the concerts and shows at one of our middle schools as well as
schools in several other districts (I think by day he works as a systems
programmer for some computer company). Must be similar people doing
part-time recording and onsite sound all over the country.
