One of the things I did in Europe was attend the seminar on 18th century
studies held in Dublin all of last week. One of the presentations dealt
with one form of ballet in 18th century France. The argument was that
the audience was seated above the stage and that the ballet consisted of
dancers forming still patterns on the stage which were then seen from
above. And one scholar from the UK said, "That sounds like nothing
less than a marching band" (although I would have said that it was more
like drum corps but the idea was very sound).
So the argument was proposed that 18th century French ballet and marching bands
have something in common. The presenter at that session was quite astonished
that she had not fully realized the relationship or had commented on it.
That form of French ballet did not last long but it was a very interesting
idea, nonetheless.
