Sometimes our kids surprise us. It's great.
A long while back I told my kids to listen to good singers if they
want to learn how to phrase. When Frank Sinatra & Mel Torme died
there was a lot of their music played on the radio & TV, and my
kids listened - the 2 older ones especially. They understood what
I was talking about.
Well, the middle son, a jazz trumpeter, told me about some French
singer he had heard whose phrasing was impeccable & dynamics
perfect for whatever she was singing. He was going to buy some CDs
of her work. I did the old Dad thing: "Yeah, that's nice." and didn't
hear much more about it. He went off & did his thing.
I was vacuuming his room on Saturday (he's away at camp) and saw the
CD covers. Now I know who it was that impressed him:
Edith Piaf
Sometimes the kids are smarter than their parents.
Good music will never die.
