Charlton is rather well-known in recorder circles, having written/adapted quite
a few works for this instrument including a large book of exercises which some
recorder players regard as the "Bible" of recorder playing. The folks at
Ritchie's Courtly Music might know more about him and his present whereabouts.
I don't have one of their flyers at hand right now but, if someone wants their
address, let me know. I think I can get it from a friend but it might take a
day or so.

According to my copy, the Charlton "Caprice" is published by Columbia Music Co.,
sole selling agent Theodore Presser Company. The copyright date is 1991 though
the piece was recorded in 1983. The dedication on my copy is "For Diane Lang
Bryan and James Smith." According to the Protone notes, Charlton originally
composed the work for saxophone and piano as a piece he (saxophone) could
perform with his wife. He later adapted it for clarinet. The music may still
be in print. Luyben's Music in Kansas City lists the work in their catalog
($8.00 U.S.). Eble Music might be another source.

One minor correction to Michael's information (we don't get to do that very
often ;^) ): According to the Protone notes, the piece was based on a theme
Charlton composed in his youth. The work, itself, probably came later.

Best regards,
Jack Kissinger
