Hearing Other Clarinet Players

Clarinet players are lucky to be able to listen to other players through
recordings or even live concerts.

In the last century one would have to travel to another city to hear a
guest clarinet player. In those days it wasn't that easy .

What could happen when an artist heard another artist?

There was a famous Finnish clarinet player and composer, Bernhard
Crusell (wrote 3 concertos plus some quartets) who traveled
extensively.

There was another famous clarinet player by the name of Simon Hermstedt,
very famous for his technique.
Spohr wrote his 4 concertos for him plus many other (not easy) works.

One day both Crusell and Hermstedt were in the same city.
Crusell wanted to meet Hermstedt, about so much had been written.
He asked Hermstedt to play for him, which the latter obliged.
After hearing him, Crusell declared:
"I shall never attempt to blow in your presence, no matter what the
reward may be".
