I doubt very much that the parents were only looking for an excuse. Kids
vary and severity of asthma (sometimes exercise-induced and sometimes not)
also varies a lot. My brother has asthma. He marched with both clarinet and
bass clarinet in his high school band. He also participated in his school's
competitive extracurriculur swimming program and in other sports, so he had
much better lungs than many asthmatics. Even so, marching with a clarinet
proved so difficult for him, and worsened his asthma so much, that my parents
came close to calling a halt every year, despite his strong desire to march.
To be able to march (optional in our school), he had to resort to much
heavier medication than he normally used, another thing that worried our
parents.
