A rather interesting aside on this thought:

It was widely discussed (but never released to the media) that had there
been a band program in place at Richland High School (Giles County,
Tennessee) that at least one of the students involved in the shooting would
have been playing the flute in the band instead of participating (to
whatever degree) in the shooting/killing, and subsequently sitting in the
State Prison for 40 years. He had played the flute in the school band in
Michigan, before he moved to Giles County.)

I understand the Board of Ed has hired a band director to organize a
program sarting this fall.
