This is definitely an important topic, especially for those of us teaching
young clarinetists. I would like to see more on how those of you who teach
at ALL levels help your students visualize and utilize correct breathing
techniques. I find getting the really young ones to stop excess upper body
movement is almost a losing battle.
I teach the "push out" breathing, and I emphasize three dimensional
abdominal+ muscle support, but it is obvious that, although it works, it is
difficult to present it logically. I really dislike having to tell my
students, "Well, I'm not sure just exactly how this works; just do it..."
For me, this sort of thing is not good teaching (they get that kind of
teaching everywhere else, many a time). Also, I refuse to let students sound
bad. It just isn't necessary. Lastly, I feel, especially for young
players, it is important to keep it as close to plain English as possible,
so they won't tune me out.
Suggestions? Your practice? What you have done with different students?
Mr. Sanchez brought up what I believe to be a pivotal subject for performers
and teachers of clarinet.
