Agreed, there is a dead horse syndrome around here, as is there is just
about any list (except the flute list?:-). Topics recur, get kicked
around for awhile, then go back into their dormant state until
someone...most often a newbie...brings it up again, generally in
innocence. On Opera-L, which I was on from January 1995 until six
months ago, you could count on an every-six-months return to "Was
Richard Wagner a Nazi?" The argument usually ended after a few weeks of
scholarly discussion, name-calling acrimony, and a couple of huffy
resignations from the list, when someone finally burped and said "Here's
a quarter. Call someone who gives a f--k." And, nota bene, the same
people dove into the fray every blessed time. Analogies? Like a
barroom fight every Saturday night among the same people in the same
saloon, just because everyone gets plastered and likes to fight. Or--a
bit more cynically?--something like an attack of herpes.

I've gotta stop posting at 6:30 in the morning....

Ken
