Roger Garrett wrote, "I am discussing musical learning as it relates to
literacy amongst the masses - and it isn't going to get any better until
music teachers in the public schools focus on musical literacy instead of
tropies to prove athletic ability and the ability to move people around on a
football field."

One other thing I'd like to add: I left my one and only position after the
Navy, teaching chorus (with one beginning band and a string classs thrown
in) in a rural school system because of the clash between entertaining the
kids (what the Admin. wanted) and educating them in music - attempting to
help the students become more musically literate (what I strongly felt - and
feel - my duty to be). Granted, I was, and am, inexperienced, but the
stress I felt in the environment came from this clash. No doubt in my mind.
