"Tendency to judge all youth orchestras by one experience. For every bad
youth orchestra experience, ..."

Roger, don't get me wrong. That was a GOOD experience. And my son
played in two different youth orchestras and I had MB students who played
in 3 or 4 other YO's. They were all about the same - good quality
musicianship and experiences. My point is that most can't afford them
and even some of those who can and are willing can't pass the auditions.
3 out of my 30 clarinettists played YO, 30 out of 30 played Gould's
"American Salute", 30 out of 30 played the Sabre Dance etc. etc. and,
yes, 30 out of 30 played Dixie.

The first time I heard Carmina was on public radio. It gave me
goosebumps, still does. 27 out of 30 clarinettists in our band probably
don't listen to public radio. Now at least some know there's more out
there... Should we start a thread on only doing/playing what the composer
actually wrote? Nah - been there and will again no doubt.

Thanks for your comments. They make me think.
Paulette
