Subj: [kl] POSITIVE MARCHING BAND EXPIERIENCES...
Date: Sat, 24 Jul 1999 13:07:02 -0400

Hello all,
My name is Helena and although i've read your postings often, this is the
first time I have ever responded. I would just like to share my opinions on
the topic of marching band. First off, in highschool I was very down on
myself and on my ability to be successful at anything I tried. I played
softball, basketball and even threw shot and discus but the first time my
Dinkles(band shoes) marched onto that grass I was in my element. My
confidence grew and I acquired a second "family"...I love all of my band
mates, each season was met with a lot of blood sweat and tears. In my band,
there is no use to be in it unless you really want to...we make a lot of
sacrifices, football games friday night and sometimes two or three
competitions on the saturday...on sundays we'd be to tired to do anything but
catch up on homework and maybe talk to the occasional friend on the phone...I
LOVED EVERY SECOND OF IT!!!! My friends outside of band saw the change it
made in me and supported me in every football game, and yes our stands were
filled at halftime...Some even gave up parties and other social events to
brave the cold and watch me at my final competition...ACC's(Atlantic Coast
Championships). During my years with my band, we had 2 top ten finishes...and
one was the year that I was section leader of the clarinet section. All of
these positive expeiriences led me to my position now, as a member of the
Delaware State University Approaching Storm Marching band. I am happy to say
that every marking period in highschool, I made honor roll because of the
band. I knew I had to work hard to stay in the activity I love. The same is
happening in college. I am tackling a pre-med/biology major along with a
minor in instrumental music. This is not small task, so I thank my marching
band instructor/music teacher...whatever he's right to be called but I just
call him a wonderful helper since his kind words and belief in me
were..."instrumental" in helping me get my band scholarship...So here's just
a positive and maybe long letter to send three cheers for the marching
band...oh and i'm first chair in DelState's band as well:)
Helena Lewis
